Finding Joy in the Show Ring: My Unexpected Journey with Ren
It was March 2024 when Ren and I stepped into the ring as exhibitors at Crufts. Me all dressed up, with my beautiful Kooikerhondje by my side. Let me tell you about the journey of showing.
The Pre-Show Jitters
Just days before the show, I was an absolute bundle of nerves. My mind raced with worst-case scenarios:
What if I tripped and fell?
What if Ren had an accident in the ring?
What if people laughed at us?
What if I did something embarrassingly stupid?
You see, I'm not one for the spotlight. The idea of being on display, even if it wasn't on television, was terrifying. And truthfully, Ren isn't a fan of being the center of attention either. So why on earth were we doing this?
We had participated in a couple of qualifying events leading up to this show. We've had pedigree dogs in the past, but showing was a new world. But Ren, our beautiful Kooiker, presented an opportunity I couldn't resist. And let me tell you a little secret about showing Kooikerhondjes - it's refreshingly simple:
Give them a bath the day before
Make sure their coat looks nice
Let them stand naturally in the ring - no fancy poses required!
One of the joys of this journey has been the Kooiker community. They are absolutely lovely people, welcoming and supportive. Their warmth played a big part in easing my nerves and making this experience enjoyable.
It's All About Connection
As we went through the day I realized why we were really doing this - it was all about the bond between Ren and me. This was our special thing, just the two of us.
I got to talk to her softly, offering encouragement, do little things to keep her happy and engaged and practice our tricks while waiting (sit, stay, spin - you name it!).
I just love being with her. It didn't matter if we won or lost. What mattered was that we were connected, moving as one in that ring.
In the end, I realized that the true joy of showing comes from:
Being happy together in the ring
Enjoying each other's company
Working as a team
Celebrating our bond
That's why I continue to show with Ren. It's not about the ribbons or the titles. It's about those precious moments we share, just the two of us, taking on a new adventure together.
Have you ever tried something new with your pet that unexpectedly brought you closer?
