Lets talk Extension leads

Dog Owners, Let's Talk About Extension Leads

We've all seen them, and maybe you've used one - those retractable dog leads that seem so convenient. But as a pet expert and safety advocate, I want to share some important information about why these leads might not be the best choice for your furry friend.

The Hidden Dangers of Extension Leads:

Lack of Control: Ever tried to grip one of these handles tightly? It's not easy, especially if your dog decides to bolt. If it slips out of your hand, that noisy, bouncing lead behind your dog might just scare them into running further!

The Tricky Lock: That clicking sound when you unlock the lead? Your clever pup quickly learns what it means - time to run away!

Safety Hazards: I've heard heartbreaking stories of dogs running into traffic on these leads. The extra length can give them access to danger zones before you can react.

Tangling Troubles: The thin cord can wrap around legs (yours, your dog's, or even a passerby's), causing nasty burns or cuts. And good luck trying to grab that extended cord quickly!

Training Troubles: Want to practice recall? These leads make it super challenging to guide your dog back to you effectively.

So When Should You Use Them?

Honestly, I rarely recommend them. But if you must:

Only in completely enclosed, safe spaces

For specific recall training exercises

When there are no other dogs or distractions around

Safer Alternatives

Standard Fixed-Length Leads: Old school, but effective!

Long-Line Leads: For more freedom in safe areas

Harnesses with Front-Clip Attachments: Great for dogs that like to pull

Remember, our top priority is keeping our dogs safe while letting them enjoy their walks. Sometimes, the simplest tools are the best!
