My Thoughts on the Kennel Cough Vaccine for Dogs: A Personal Perspective
Before I dive in, I want to make it crystal clear: this is my personal opinion. I'm not advising anyone against getting the kennel cough vaccine for their dogs. I firmly believe that all dogs should receive essential vaccinations – I've witnessed firsthand the devastating consequences when they don't. But when it comes to the kennel cough vaccine, I think it's worth having a thoughtful discussion.
My goal is to encourage dog owners to do their research before deciding on the kennel cough vaccine. Here's why:
Mixed Effectiveness: I've heard from numerous dog owners that their pets still developed coughs or colds even after receiving the vaccine. In one case I personally witnessed, a vaccinated dog caught an illness while an unvaccinated dog in the same household remained healthy.
It's Optional: Unlike core vaccines, the kennel cough vaccine isn't always required. It's most commonly requested by boarding facilities. Before assuming you need it, check with your facility about their specific requirements.
Multiple Strains: There are many different strains of canine respiratory illnesses. The vaccine doesn't cover all of them, meaning your dog could still get sick even if vaccinated.
Vaccine Shedding: After vaccination, dogs can "shed" the vaccine, potentially affecting other dogs around them or even causing mild illness in the vaccinated dog itself. I know of one case where a dog became quite ill following the kennel cough vaccine.
Despite my reservations, there are situations where I believe the kennel cough vaccine is beneficial:
For older dogs with existing health conditions who frequently interact with other dogs
For dogs with compromised immune systems
In these cases, it's similar to humans with underlying health conditions getting a flu shot. While it might not prevent all illness, it can reduce the severity of symptoms and potentially prevent serious complications.
What I suggest...
Do Your Research: Look into the pros and cons, discuss with your vet, and make an informed decision.
Consider Your Dog's Lifestyle: If your dog rarely interacts with other dogs or doesn't board often, the vaccine might be unnecessary.
Be Aware of Shedding: If you do vaccinate, be cautious about your dog interacting with other dogs immediately after.
Don't Panic About Mild Illnesses: Even without the vaccine, many dogs recover from kennel cough-like illnesses without complications. Just keep them away from other dogs for about a week.
Prioritize Core Vaccines: Never skip the essential vaccines that protect against life-threatening diseases.
Remember, this isn't about conspiracy theories or dismissing modern veterinary medicine. It's about making thoughtful choices for our dogs. If you don't absolutely need to give this particular vaccine, it might be worth reconsidering.
What are your thoughts on the kennel cough vaccine? Have you had experiences – positive or negative – with it?
